Preparing Your Naples Home for Hurricane Season: A Complete Guide

Living in Naples means hurricane season is always part of the deal. June through November, every year, we watch the tropics and hope for the best. At JY Mega FC Construction, we've helped hundreds of families protect their homes—and recover when storms hit—over the past 20+ years.

Why This Actually Matters

Hurricane Ian in 2022 was a brutal reminder. We saw it across Lee and Collier counties: homes that were properly reinforced came through way better than those that weren't. The preparation you do now pays for itself when a storm actually hits.

Your Roof Is Your First Defense

Get it inspected before hurricane season. Seriously. Here's what matters:

Have a pro look at it before storms are in the forecast. We're looking for loose or damaged tiles, worn shingles, compromised flashing—problems you won't see from the ground.
Hurricane straps are critical. These metal connectors tie your roof to your walls. Homes built before 2002 often don't have adequate tie-downs. If yours doesn't, fix that.
Seal the gaps around roof penetrations—vents, chimneys, skylights. Water gets in through small gaps during wind-driven rain.
Consider upgrading if your roof is over 15 years old. Modern impact-rated materials make a real difference.

Impact Windows and Doors

This is one of the smartest investments you can make in Naples:

When wind and debris enter your home, they can cause catastrophic pressure damage—literally blow out walls and lift roofs. Impact glass prevents that.
Florida building codes require impact protection for new construction and major renovations now. There's a reason for that.
Bonus: impact windows help year-round with noise reduction, UV protection, and lower energy bills.

Don't Forget the Garage Door

Here's something people miss: garage doors are often the weakest point in your house. If they fail, wind rushes in and can literally lift your roof off. Think about:

Hurricane-rated garage doors (not cheap, but worth it)
Bracing kits for existing doors
Backup batteries for automatic openers so you can still get out

The Yard and Exterior

Basic stuff, but important:

Trim trees and cut dead branches—they become projectiles
Bring in outdoor furniture, grills, decorations
Clear gutters so heavy rain can drain
Know where your main water shutoff and electrical panel are

Build a Real Hurricane Kit

Don't wait until a storm is coming to figure this out:

Water—one gallon per person per day for at least 7 days
Non-perishable food and a manual can opener
Flashlights, batteries, battery-powered radio
First aid kit and any medications you need
Important documents in waterproof containers
Cash—ATMs and card readers don't work when the power's out

After a Storm Hits

If you have damage:

1. Document everything with photos and videos before making any temporary repairs

2. Call your insurance company promptly

3. Work with a licensed contractor for proper repairs

We hold four Florida licenses—General Contracting (CGC1536790), Roofing (CCC1336198), Plumbing (CFC1433356), and HVAC (CAC1823726)—so we handle everything hurricane damage throws at you. One call, one contractor.
